GERMAN SUNDANCE AND CANNES HITS IN KARLOVY VARY
The popular summer 'A' festival in the Czech town of Karlovy Vary has unveiled its program for 2017. Participation from Germany will include well-known names from Sundance and Cannes. In addition, the actress and screenwriter Anna Brüggemann is a member of this year's Grand Jury which will be deciding on the winner of the Crystal Globe in the Main Competition. The 52nd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is being held from 30 June to 8 July 2017.
For Anna Brüggemann, the invitation to serve on the jury is almost the logical development of her history with Karlovy Vary as she had been in the program with a project for each of the past three years: in 2014 with STATIONS OF THE CROSS, for which she had been awarded the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlinale with her brother Dietrich Brüggemann. In 2015, she appeared as an actress in HEIL which screened in the Main Competition. And 2016 saw the screening of the film RUN IF YOU CAN where she had credits as both screenwriter and actress.
Helene Hegemann's directorial debut AXOLOTL OVERKILL (Vandertastic, Constantin Film Produktion) will follow its world premiere in the World Dramatic Competition at Sundance by screening in the Another View sidebar at Karlovy Vary. Sundance was also the place where MY HAPPY FAMILY by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross (DE/GE/FR, augenschein Filmproduktion) began its international festival career, and it will be shown in Horizons at Karlovy Vary.
Other Horizons titles will be coming straight from the Festival de Cannes: IN THE FADE by Fatih Akin (DE/FR, bombero international, Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, corazón international) and WESTERN by Valeska Grisebach (DE/BG/AT, Komplizen Film).
OH BOY by Jan Ole Gerster (Schiwago Film, Chromosom Filmproduktion), which began its remarkable international festival journey at Karlovy Vary in 2012, will be shown in a section to honor the 30th anniversary of the European Film Academy.
Four films with German involvement have been programmed in the competitive sections, with the festival featuring a total of 23 German films and co-productions in its program.
